Tennis Sweeps Lee in Final Home Matches

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams played their final home matches this season versus Lee Saturday, and the men ran past the Flames 8-1 while the women were 6-3 winners.

The men's squad finishes its GSC schedule with a three-game win streak, bringing their conference mark to 5-4 while improving to 8-7 overall. The ladies rise to a 9-9 overall record and 6-4 in conference play.

Dropping a point at No. 1, the men took the remaining doubles matches with an 8-4 victory from Jose Soto and Elliot Hopson at position two and an 8-2 win from Nestor Perez and Harrison Stone at No. 3.

Holding the 2-1 lead, the Chargers swept singles play, headlined by a pair of 6-0, 6-0 matches from Hopson and Stone at the No. 5 and 6 singles. Soto and David Cooper also cruised to victory with Soto defeating Ignacio Salom Hernandez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 while Cooper nearly blanked Mike Herelle 6-1, 6-0 at position four.

A couple of three-set victories at positions No. 2 and 3 sealed the singles sweep with Perez defeating Rhys Milne 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Pablo Herrero sliding past Daniel Hardesty 7-6(0), 3-6, 7-6(2) at No. 3.

On the women's side, UAH quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Marleen Gort and Naomi Esteve won 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles position, while the No. 2 point was captured by Katie Bryant and Cristina Cabanas in an 8-2 victory. The Flames picked up the third point, however, to make it 2-1 heading into singles action.

The Chargers took singles positions one, two, and three in straight sets, ensuring victory, with wins from Gort (6-2, 6-4), Cabanas (6-2, 6-3), and Marta Briega (6-2, 6-2).

Lee took positions No. 4 and 6, while Esteve was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at position five.
