FINAL GSC HOME SERIES: With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Chargers (32-9, 19-6 Gulf South Conference) will wrap up its home conference slate this weekend with a visit from Union. Due to the weather concerns, the schedule has been shifted and the teams will play a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before concluding the series on Saturday with a noon contest.
Â
STANDINGS UPDATE: The Chargers moved into second place in the GSC last weekend, going a game up on North Alabama in the loss column who is 16-7 in league play. Valdosta State remains firmly in first at 23-3, while Shorter (17-9) is in fourth. The top six make the tournament, and fifth place is currently occupied by Union (13-13), and Delta State is in sixth (8-12).
Â
BACK ON TRACK: After being swept on the road at North Alabama, the Chargers have responded in positive fashion, winning nine of their next 10 games including a series win over No. 1 Valdosta State. The Chargers have scored 7.6 runs per game during the stretch while allowing just 1.5 in the 10 games.
Â
SUPER SENIORS: UAH will honor its three seniors this weekend as it will mark the final GSC home games for
Victoria Frith,
Morgan Hopkins and
Michal Robertson. Hopkins is a four-year contributor for the Chargers, while Frith was an all-conference player a year ago after transferring from Wallace-Hanceville. Robertson has been strong for the Chargers this year after sitting out last year following her transfer from West Alabama.
Â
ABOUT UNION: The Bulldogs come to the Rocket City with a 25-15 (13-13 GSC) record, and the team features a 9-10 mark away from Jackson, Tennessee. Winners of seven of its last nine games, Union has positioned itself just outside of the top eight in the regional rankings, checking in at No. 10 in the initial poll of the South Region announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.
Â
LEADING THE WAY: Union's Kelly Robey has been strong in the circle, striking out 256 in 193.2 innings pitched while allowing opponents to hit just .174, and she has tossed three no hitters, including a pair against GSC opponents (West Florida and West Alabama). Offensively, Reagan Schrader paces the team with a .365 average and a team-best 29 RBI.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: After sweeping a three-game set last year in the Volunteer State, the Chargers own a 5-0 all-time advantage in the brief series with the GSC newcomer Bulldogs.
