MONTGOMERY, Ala. |The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis programs fell in the first round of the GSC tournament Saturday, with the men dropping a thrilling 5-4 match to fourth-seeded West Alabama and the women suffering a 5-1 setback to rival North Alabama at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
With the loss, the men finish the season at 9-8 overall, while the women slip to 9-10.
The men's squad jumped out in front early, with points coming from an 8-4 victory for
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson at doubles No. 2 and at position No. 3, where
Nestor Perez and
Harrison Stone were 8-5 winners.
Holding a 2-1 lead entering singles play, Soto and Perez parlayed their doubles success into wins at positions one and two. Soto defeated Adam Drysdale 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Perez upended Andrii Stratilenko 6-2, 6-1 at No.2.
The Tigers would take the next four points with the clincher coming from a tight 6-3, 4-6, 2-6 loss from Stone at position six.
On the women's side, North Alabama took a 2-1 lead early, with the Chargers' lone doubles point coming at position No. 3 where
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Abby Burks were 8-4 winners.
That would be UAH's last point as the Lions picked up clinching wins at positions one, three, and six.
Despite the setbacks, the Chargers return 13 total players between the two squads and enter the offseason with nine wins each and winning conference records.
