ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams traveled to Georgia Wednesday to take on the Shorter Hawks, and the men were 5-4 winners while the women's team fell 5-4.
The win brings the men's squad to a 7-7 overall record and 4-4 in GSC play while the women drop to 8-9 and 5-4 in conference.
The men's team got off to a rough start, dropping two out of three doubles matches with their only victory coming at position No. 2 where
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson were 8-1 winners.
The Chargers fared much better in singles play, winning four of six matches, headlined by a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 by the 46th-ranked Soto.
Nestor Perez defeated Alexis Catillion 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 while Hopson handled Patrick Sanders 6-4, 6-1 at position five.
Harrison Stone won a tightly contested match versus Robert Watson 7-5, 7-6(2) clinching the victory for UAH at position No. 6.
On the women's side, the Chargers fell behind the Hawks early, with their lone doubles point coming from an 8-3 win from
Marleen Gort and
Naomi Esteve at No. 1.
UAH was able to pick up three more points in singles play, led by
Katie Bryant's 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sicquena Sinclair at position six.
Cristina Cabanas and
Naomi Esteve collected the Chargers' remaining points with Cabanas winning 6-2, 5-7 (10-8) at No. 2 and Esteve coming out a 6-1, 5-7 (11-9) winner at No. 4.
The men's team will be back in action Friday in Birmingham, Alabama where they take on UAB, while the women await an April 11 home match versus Lee.
