UAH Falls to Shorter on Saturday at Spragins Hall

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team fell to Shorter by a score of 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 22-25) in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH slips to 11-1, 2-1 GSC, while SU improves to 3-3, 1-1 GSC.
 
The Chargers started out the first set in a 5-0 hole after the Hawks rallied for five early points to start out the match, but the Blue and White battled back to bring Shorter within two at a 12-10 score. SU immediately followed with another 5-0 rally and would eventually take the first set 25-19.
 
The second stanza was tightly contested between the two sides as the score was knotted at 11-11 midway through the set. However, Shorter would rally for five consecutive points to take a 16-11 lead. The Chargers put together a late 4-0 run with Kirsten Giles serving, but the Hawks responded with two straight points to win the set 25-21.
 
Shorter led for much of the beginning of the third frame, extending its advantage to 17-9 before UAH would rally for seven consecutive points to bring the score within one at 17-16. Following a 3-0 run for the Hawks, UAH would overtake Shorter with a five-point rally to make it a 21-20 Chargers lead. Shorter went on to score five of the last six points to earn a 25-22 victory in the third set and the three-set win.
 
Offensively, the Chargers were led by sophomore Anna Claire Johnson with 10 kills, followed by Rachel Brugman who posted six kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Giles registered her fifth consecutive double-double with 26 assists and a season-best 15 digs.
 
UAH will continue GSC play on the road next week with a trip through the state of Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers (9/25) in Memphis and Union (9/26) in Jackson.
