UAH Knocks Off Visiting Christian Brothers Monday

PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | Dina Saunders scored a career-best 32 points, leading The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team to a 75-65 victory over visiting Christian Brothers on Monday afternoon at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 8-6 (5-5 GSC) on the year, while CBU falls to 6-8 (4-6 GSC).

The 32-point performance for Dina Saunders marks the best by a Charger since Jordan Smith scored 40 against Troy on Nov. 26, 2013.

For good measure, the senior recorded her first career double-double as she also added a personal-best 14 rebounds. Saunders finished the game 7-for-12 from the field including five 3-pointers, and she was a terrific 13-for-15 from the charity stripe.

Joining her in double figures on the day was Josi Saunders who scored 13.

After starting off the game on a 9-0 run that featured back-to-back treys from Dina Saunders to open the scoring, the Chargers would end the first quarter in front 13-12, and that advantage would grow slightly as the hosts went into the locker room at the break ahead 34-31.

The advantage would grow to as many as eight in the third quarter before the Lady Bucs – led on the night by Samantha Reeves who scored 20 – would close the gap to five at 43-38 with 4:46 left in the period, but the Chargers then ripped off a 7-0 run to establish their largest lead of the night at 50-38 at the 2:26 mark.

CBU then would pull as close as four in the fourth quarter but could not whittle the UAH lead down any further as the Chargers 10 of the last 14 points in the game.

For the contest, UAH connected on 42.9 percent of its attempts while CBU shot 43.1 percent, but the Chargers hit 10 3-pointers compared to a 6-for-20 showing from beyond the arc for the Lady Bucs.

Rebounds in the contest were even at 32-32.

The Chargers recorded 16 assists on their 21 successful field goals, and freshman Baylee Johnson logged a team-high five while Chandler Elder handed out four helpers while turning it over just once.

UAH will now turn its attention to its rivalry showdown with North Alabama as the Chargers travel to Florence on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall on the UNA campus.
