PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team picked up a thrilling overtime win with a national television audience watching as UAH knocked off visiting West Florida 68-65 on Saturday at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 11-6 (8-5 Gulf South Conference) with the win, while UWF slips to 11-6 (9-4 GSC).
Â
Trailing 55-49 with 3:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, UAH proceeded to go on an 8-2 run as both
Chandler Elder and
Dina Saunders scored four points, and it was a layup by Saunders with just under a minute left in regulation that knotted the game at 57-57 and forced the extra period.
Â
After West Florida scored the first two points of overtime, UAH would outscore the Argos by an 11-6 clip as Elder added four more points to help the hosts seal the victory.
Â
Dina Saunders led the Chargers on the night, scoring 14, and she was joined in double figures by
Josi Saunders who chipped in with 12. Finishing the contest with 11 to give UAH four in double figures in the game were both Elder and
Baylee Johnson.
Â
Toni Brewer scored 21 to lead UWF.
Â
The contest was tight throughout as it featured seven ties and seven lead changes, and it was the Argos who held the lead after two quarters were complete as the teams went into the locker room at the break with UWF holding a slim 29-28 advantage.
Â
The biggest momentum swings came in the third and fourth quarters when the Chargers ripped off a 13-1 run that included a straight of 10 straight points that allowed UAH to own the largest lead of the contest at 43-33 with 3:55 remaining in the third, but UWF answered with a 14-2 run that also featured a string of 10 consecutive to regain the lead at 47-45 just over three minutes into the fourth to setup the late dramatics.
Â
UAH outshot the Argos by a wide margin in the contest, registering a field goal mark of 47.1 percent compared to UWF's 37.5 percent shooting rate, and the Chargers also won the battle on the glass by a 34-31 margin.
Â
Four Chargers –
Dina Saunders,
Loren Foster,
Halle Jarnagin, and Elder – all grabbed five rebounds.
Â
The home team committed just 13 turnovers in the contest, reducing its total of 21 from the meeting between the two teams in Pensacola earlier this year, and UAH logged 19 assists on 24 made field goals.
Â
UAH will now begin a stretch that sees the team hit the road for four straight, starting with a Thursday trip to Carrollton for a 5 p.m. CST contest at West Georgia. The Chargers won 58-54 when the two teams met in Huntsville on Dec. 12.
