CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team took over sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference on Thursday night, defeating West Georgia 83-73 in a battle between the top two teams in the league. UAH moves to 14-5 (11-3 GSC), while UWG falls to 13-6 (10-4 GSC).
Â
West Georgia had not lost at home in 10 previous games this season.
Â
Seab Webster led all scorers in the contest as he hit three 3-pointers en route to scoring 19, and he was joined in double figures by three other Chargers including
Troy Saxton who was 6-for-8 from the floor while scoring 16. Adding 13 was
Preston Herring, while
Kip Owens came off the bench to score 10.
Â
For good measure, Herring matched a team-high with eight rebounds while also blocking five shots.
Â
Greg Gardner also turned in a terrific performance, nearly registering a triple-double as he scored nine, collected eight rebounds and dished out a season-best 11 assists.
Â
Trailing by three at 63-60 with 7:41 remaining in the contest, the Chargers went on their most impressive stretch of the game, ripping off a 14-1 run over just under five minutes with a Gardner triple punctuating the spurt and giving UAH its largest lead of the night at 74-64.
Â
The Wolves would pull back to within five at the 1:31 mark, but five free throws and a Saxton layup in the waning moments helped UAH secure the victory.
Â
West Georgia led by as many as nine points in the opening half and enjoyed that margin with just under a minute remaining  in the period, but
Chayse Elliott and Saxton both converted old-fashioned three-point plays in the final minute to pull within three at 44-41 going into the locker room at the break.
Â
Marcus Dortch led the Wolves in the game as he scored 18.
Â
For the contest, the Chargers outshot the hosts by a 46.9 percent to 40.7 percent margin, while the battle on the glass was even as both sides grabbed 36 rebounds.
Â
UAH was strong inside, outscoring the Wolves inside the paint 34-20.
Â
UAH will return to action on Saturday as the team continues its four-game road trip, travelling to West Alabama for a 4 p.m. contest. The Tigers won the previous meeting between the two teams this year, claiming a 74-66 victory in Huntsville.
