Chargers Drop Saturday Road Contest at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell 78-68 at West Alabama on Saturday, slipping to 11-8 (8-7 Gulf South Conference) on the season. UWA improves to 7-12 (4-10 GSC).

Freshman Baylee Johnson paced the Chargers in the contest, scoring 17 while also grabbing five rebounds. She was joined in double figures by three other UAH players as Josi Saunders scored 14, Dina Saunders added 13, and Halle Jarnagin chipped in with 12.

Each of the three additional double-figure scorers also grabbed five rebounds, while Chandler Elder led the team by snagging seven boards.

The visitors outscored West Alabama 13-11 in the first quarter, and that translated into a 30-28 advantage at the half for the Chargers after both teams scored 17 in the second frame.

Seven Chargers scored in a balanced offensive attack in the opening 20 minutes.

UAH then led through most of the third quarter and established its largest lead of the afternoon at 53-47 with just 18 seconds left in the period, but UWA would hit a three at the buzzer to close the gap to just three at 53-50 at the end of the quarter.

The Chargers enjoyed that three-point cushion again at the 7:51 mark of the final stanza, but over the next five minutes, the hosts – led by Ariel Wilson's 20 in the game – went on a 14-4 run to go up 69-62 and then did not let UAH pull any closer than four in the final minutes while securing the win.

For the contest, UAH was outshot by UWA by a 45.0 percent to 35.4 percent margin, and the West Alabama bench outscored the Charger reserves by a 26-10 difference. The Tigers also won the rebounding battle, grabbing 36 to UAH's 31.

On tap next for the Chargers is a continuation of the team's four-game road trip as UAH travels to Lee on Thursday with the tip slated for 5 p.m. CST. Earlier this season, Lee was a 79-52 winner over UAH in Huntsville.
