Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lee Survives Strong Charger Effort on Thursday

CLEVELAND, Tenn. | Despite a strong late push that saw The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team take a lead, ultimately it was Lee who won by a 61-60 score in a road contest for the Chargers on Thursday night. UAH drops to 11-9 (8-8 Gulf South Conference), while Lee improves to 15-6 (12-4 GSC).

Trailing by five at 47-42 with 7:22 left in the game, UAH would go on a run that was punctuated by a pair of Halle Jarnagin free throws with 5:14 remaining that allowed the Chargers to go in front 49-47, but Lee answered back with four straight 3-pointers to go back in front 59-49.

The visitors narrowed the gap back down to three and had the ball with a chance to tie with the shot clock off, but the Flames grabbed the defensive rebound and made a free throw on the other end before Chandler Elder hit a 3-pointer at the clock's expiration to produce the 61-60 final.

Elder finished the night with 16 points as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc while also grabbing seven rebounds, and her scoring performance was matched by Dina Saunders who also knocked down three triples while scoring 16 and collecting a team-best nine boards.

Jarnagin joined that pair in double figures as she scored 10, and the senior also dished out a team-high four assists.

UAH started off strong, holding its largest lead of the night with a six-point advantage by the 4:34 mark of the first quarter, but the Flames would outscore the Chargers by an 11-4 margin on the way to holding a 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.

That advantage for Lee would grow 29-27 by the halftime break.

After trailing by as many as six early in the third quarter, UAH would pull back into a tie at 37-37 by the 3:06 mark of the period, but the lead would grow back to the aforementioned six-point advantage in the fourth quarter before the late game momentum swings.

Four players scored in double figures on the night for Lee with Kayla Beavers leading the way with 12 points.

The Chargers finished the night outshooting the Flames by a 40.4 percent to 32.8 percent margin, but Lee knocked down two more triples than UAH and also outscored the visitors 28-10 in points off turnovers.

Lee also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding UAH 37-36.

Wrapping up the four-game road trip, the Chargers will head to Shorter on Saturday for a 1 p.m. CST contest. The Hawks won the previous meeting, claiming a 60-47 decision on Dec. 17.
