TNU Uses Late Push to Defeat UAH 69-58

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell in the 2016-17 home opener on Tuesday night, dropping a 69-58 decision to visiting Trevecca Nazarene. The Chargers slip to 0-4 on the year, while TNU improves to 2-4.
 
Turning Point
-After UAH had taken the lead on a Baylee Johnson triple at the 7:49 mark of the fourth quarter, the visitors proceeded to go on a 17-2 run over the next 5:27 to go up 60-47 with just 2:22 left in the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Johnson led a trio of players who scored in double figures as she buried four 3-pointers en route to scoring 20 points.
-Joining her in double figures was Chandler Elder who scored 18, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out five assists.
-The double-figure scoring contingent was rounded out by freshman Aryn Sanders who scored 13.
-Addi Hale led all scorers in the contest as she scored 25 for the Trojans.
-On the night, TNU connected on 43.4 percent of its attempts including a 10-for-23 performance from 3-point land, and the Chargers shot 37.2 percent. The visitors also won the battle on the glass by a 34-30 margin.
 
Inside the Flow
-UAH started off the contest on a strong note, jumping out to a 12-3 lead at the 4:05 mark of the opening quarter, but the visiting team responded with a 12-3 spurt of its own to tie the game before the Chargers carried a 17-15 advantage out of the first quarter.
-The teams then exchanged significant runs again to start the second, with TNU opening the period on an 11-0 string of points before the Chargers answered with seven straight. The teams would then go into the locker room at the break with Trevecca leading 35-28.
-Finding itself down by 10 at 41-31 near the midway point of the third quarter, UAH went on another impressive run as Sanders and Johnson scored four each as part of an 11-0 showing that was punctuated by a Loren Foster 3-pointer that lifted the Chargers in front at 42-41.
-After the key late run for the Trojans, the teams combined for 17 successful free throws in final two minutes, but UAH was unable to pull no closer than eight in the waning moments.
 
Noteworthy
-The scoring performance by Johnson is the best of the season by a UAH player, and it marks the first time that a Charger has reached the 20-point plateau.
-Elder's five assists mark a season high for the junior.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will open up the conference slate on Sunday when the team travels to rival North Alabama. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
