HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team picked up its seventh straight win, defeating Delta State 85-79 on Thursday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 18-5 (15-3 Gulf South Conference), while DSU slips to 16-8 (11-7 GSC).

With three of the teams that entered the night tied for second place falling on Thursday and UAH holding the tiebreaker over West Georgia who was the lone team to win and remain three games back, the Chargers now just need one win to secure the regular season crown and the top seed in the GSC Men's Basketball Championships.

Brandon Roberts was terrific for the Chargers, scoring a season-best 26 points on the strength of a 9-for-12 night from the floor including a pair of triples. Joining Roberts in double figures were three Chargers including
Seab Webster who scored 15 while matching a team-high with five rebounds, while
Michael Gilmore and
Troy Saxton added 11 and 10, repsecitvely.

Greg Gardner scored nine, matched Webster with the five boards, and dished out eight assists to help record 22 assists on 27 made field goals.

The Chargers roared out to a scorching start, outscoring the visiting Statesmen 28-4 over the game's first 10 minutes with Roberts scoring nine and Webster adding eight during the stretch, but Delta State scored 21 to UAH's 10 over the remaining minutes of the first half to cut the UAH advantage to 38-25 by the break.

The visitors – paced by Devin Schmidt's 29 – would continue to narrow the gap in the second half, ultimately pulling into a 69-69 tie by the 5:19 mark of the period, and the Statesmen would go up by a point twice, leading 72-71 with 4:28 left and again after a pair of Schmidt free throws put DSU ahead 77-76 with 1:38 left on the clock.

 A Roberts jumper on the ensuing possession lifted UAH back to a 78-77 advantage before grabbing a key board on the other end, and then Saxton hit five free throws, Webster added one, and Roberts a pair at the stripe to help UAH seal the victory.

For the contest, UAH shot 48.2 percent from the field to outshoot Delta State who connected on 44.6 percent of its attempts, and it was the Statesmen who won the battle on the glass, outrebounding UAH 39-29.

UAH committed a season-low six turnovers in the game while forcing DSU to give it away 11 times, and the Chargers converted that into a 15-6 advantage in points off miscues, and UAH also received a big boost from its bench as the Charger reserves held a 23-10 advantage of Delta State's.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when Mississippi College for a 4 p.m. tilt. When the two teams met earlier this season in Clinton, UAH was a 70-64 winner over the Choctaws.
