MOBILE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team travelled to Spring Hill on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader, coming away with a split after falling in the opener 12-3 and taking the night cap 9-7. UAH moves to 5-4 on the year, while SHC sits at 5-4.
Game oneThe Chargers four-game win streak was snapped in game one of the doubleheader against Spring Hill, as the Badgers would take the opening contest by a final score of 12-3.
UAH was first on the board after both teams went scoreless in the first frame, as
Michael Fox belted his first home run of the year - a two-run shot to left - that also scored
Wright Hackett on the play in the top of the second.
However, the Badgers rebounded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second, before taking a 6-2 lead with a four-run rally in the third frame. UAH starting pitcher
Logan Crook was tagged with five earned runs while walking two and striking out one.
Spring Hill would continue its offensive success in the following inning, plating a total of five runs in the fourth to extend the advantage over the Blue and White by a score of 11-2.
Senior
Matt Spruill went on to add a solo homer in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to eight runs, but SHC responded with its own solo shot by Alex Jones to bring the game to its 12-3 final.
Crook's record dipped to 0-2 on the season, with
Riley Camp and
Landon Boggs providing a combined 3.0 innings of relief, two earned runs, four strikeouts and three walks. In total, seven of SHC's 12 runs were earned in game one.
Wright Hackett led the UAH offense in the opening game with a 2-for-3 performance and one run scored.
Game twoUAH bounced back in game two on Wednesday, as the Blue and White would earn the come-from-behind victory by a 9-7 final over Spring Hill.
After scoreless first for both teams, the Chargers would take the first lead of the game as
Justin Cantrell notched a two-run homer - his first of the season - in the top of the second. Spring Hill was able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom half, but sophomore
AJ Walden helped UAH regain the two-run advantage with a solo homer to left field.
The Badgers then proceeded to rally for five runs in the bottom of the third off UAH starting pitcher
Gabe Gunter, who was tagged with six total runs - four earned - over 2.2 innings with four walks and two strikeouts.
Undeterred, the Chargers would overtake the Badgers lead with a six-run rally in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam from junior
Trey Mathis for his first homer of 2016.
UAH went on to win the contest by the 9-7 final, thanks to stellar relief by freshman
Taylor Clemons who provided 3.1 shutout innings with one hit allowed and a career-high six strikeouts. Clemons now has 10.2 consecutive scoreless frames to start his collegiate career.
Chris Kilpatrick finished the game for UAH in the bottom of the seventh, allowing one run in the inning and earning his first save of the season in the process.
The Chargers look ahead to the beginning of GSC play at home against Lee for a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
