HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Lee on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park by scores of 7-2 and 2-1. UAH improves to 7-4 (2-0 GSC), while Lee dips to 5-4 (0-2 GSC).
Game oneBoth sides entered into a pitcher's duel in the early going, despite Lee taking an early advantage on a RBI double by Ben Holland off UAH starting pitcher
Wilson Adams to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Â
Both sides went scoreless in the fourth and fifth frames, but the Chargers ended Lee's shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth with a five-run rally.
Zach Dugas and
Michael Fox provided RBI base knocks in the inning, while
AJ Walden's two-RBI single up the middle highlighted the rally.
Â
Trenton Hill ended Adams' day with a solo home run to left-center to cut the Chargers lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth, but the right-hander finished the day with 7.1 innings pitched, three walks, two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Adams improved to 2-1 with the win.
Â
After freshman
Taylor Clemons came out of the bullpen and escaped the top of the eighth unscathed, junior
Trey Mathis gave UAH a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer to left-center to bring the game to its eventual 7-2 final.
Â
Clemons finished off the game in the top of the ninth, ending the contest with a perfect 1.2 innings pitched and one strikeout to give him his second save of the year. The Huntsville native has now started his collegiate career with 11.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
Â
Game twoThe Chargers held the advantage early in the second game on Saturday as the Chargers posted two runs in the second inning on a RBI double from Mathis and a RBI single to right by
Wright Hackett after both squads went scoreless in the first frame.
Â
UAH benefitted from a stellar starting pitching performance from
Will Myers, who had not allowed a hit heading into the sixth inning. Myers ended the game with one run allowed, two hits and seven strikeouts while improving to a perfect 3-0 on the season.
Chris Kilpatrick also had a successful outing out of the bullpen for the Blue and White, finishing off the final 2.0 innings pitched with no hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. Kilpatrick notched his second save of the year in the process.
Mathis led the Chargers offensively in the second game, reaching base in all three at-bats going 1-for-1 with one run scored, one RBI and two walks.
UAH and Lee have agreed to move up Sunday's contest to 11 a.m. from 1 p.m. at Charger Park due to inclement weather in the latter part of the day.
