UAH Tripped Up at No. 11 Union on Saturday

JACKSON, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dropped an 84-70 decision to No. 11 Union on Saturday, slipping to 14-11 (11-10 Gulf South Conference). UU improves to 25-2 (19-2 GSC).

With Saturday's results, UAH is now locked in as the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament and will travel to the No. 3 seed on Tuesday, March 1, after the Chargers conclude the regular season at home next Saturday when North Alabama visits for a 2 p.m. contest.

In the setback to the nationally-ranked Bulldogs, Caroline Dodd led a quartet of Chargers who scored in double figures as she scored 17 on the strength of five 3-pointers.

Joining her were Baylee Johnson who scored 16, Dina Saunders who chipped in with 15, and Josi Saunders who tallied 11.

Those four players combined to hit 13 of the 14 shots from beyond the arc that the visitors made on the day.

UAH led through much of the first quarter, but Union would finish the opening frame ahead by one at 17-16 on its way to a 42-38 advantage at the halftime break despite Dodd scoring 14 of her 17 in the first 20 minutes.

The Chargers would tie the contest on a pair of occasions in the third quarter, but after the game was deadlocked at 46-46 at the 6:11 mark of the period, Union would go on a 14-4 run to go ahead 60-50 with just a minute left in the third and then would use a 10-0 run in the fourth to put away UAH after the Chargers pulled back within three early in the quarter.

Union – led by Tiara Caldwell's 27 – finished the night shooting 51.8 percent, while the Chargers shot 45.6 percent. UAH, however, was much stronger from beyond the arc, hitting 48.3 percent of its long-range attempts compared to a 26.3 percent showing from the hosts.

The Bulldogs won the battle on the glass, holding a 35-30 margin in rebounds, and UU used that advantage to hold an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.
