UAH Knocks Off Rival UNA in Regular Season Finale

PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team capped off the regular season in fine form on Saturday, defeating visiting rival North Alabama 58-51 in front of a capacity crowd at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers move to 15-11 (12-10 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while UNA slips to 5-22 (4-18 GSC). UAH will now turn its attention to the 2016 GSC Women's Basketball Championships as the squad travels to Rome, Georgia, on Tuesday as the six seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 seed Shorter at 6 p.m. CST.

The contest on Saturday marked the final home game for UAH's seniors – Halle Jarnagin, Sara Jarnagin, Dina Saunders, and Josi Saunders – and each of the four landed on the scoresheet in helping the Chargers to the win.

Dina Saunders went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc en route to scoring a team-best 17 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds, while Chandler Elder scored 15 and collected eight boards. Halle Jarnagin rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11.

Aiding UAH in holding a 42-29 edge on the glass, both Josi Saunders and Sara Jarnagin grabbed five rebounds.

UAH scored the first six points of the game before UNA went on a 10-0 run that would help the guests hold an 18-13 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, but a 17-9 run over the last seven minutes of the second quarter allowed the Chargers to go in front by three at 33-30 at the half.

Scoring nine of the first 13 points of the second half then helped establish the tone for the remainder of the contest as the Chargers would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way as UAH only allowed UNA nine points in the fourth quarter and did not permit the Lions to score in the final four minutes of the game.

Katelyn Nunley led the way for North Alabama as she scored 13, and she was the only player that UAH allowed to reach double figures.

For the contest, UAH shot 43.8 percent while using a strong defensive effort to hold the guests to a shooting mark of just 30.8 percent.

The Chargers did commit 22 turnovers in the game, but it was the hosts who held the advantage in points off turnovers, converting UNA's 15 miscues into 15 points while limiting the damage off of their own giveaways to just 14 point. Additionally, UAH held a strong advantage inside, outscoring UNA 32-14 in the paint.
