HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's lacrosse team won the program's inaugural in thrilling fashion on Sunday, scoring with 2:27 on the clock in overtime to secure an 11-10 win over visiting Brevard. UAH starts out at 1-0, while BC falls to 0-3.
Â
After
Daniel Wilson, Jr. had scored with three minutes remaining in regulation to level the contest at 10-10,
Quincy Ward scored his second of the game in the overtime period to lift the Chargers to the historic victory.
Â
The first goal in program history came much earlier in the contest when
Kevin Coppinger assisted on
Mattie D'Amico's score with 7:33 left in the first quarter to elate the large Charger Park crowd, but the visitors seized the momentum with a pair of goals less than a minute apart towards the end of the quarter. Brevard eventually added three more goals to grab a 5-1 lead with just over four minutes left until the half, but
Dylan Aden scored an unassisted tally and
John Forrest Ruble set up
Collin Wilcox with 1:55 left in the second quarter to pull the Chargers back within two at 5-3 at the break.
Â
Scoring just under two minutes into the third quarter were the Tornados, but the Chargers then went on a torrid stretch and scored five goals of their own in less than four minutes to take an 8-6 lead at the 7:33 mark.
Â
Aden, Wilson, and Ward scored the first three of the stretch with Ward's tying the contest at 6-6 before
Isaiah Currie's unassisted strike gave UAH a 7-6 lead, and Coppinger's man-up score put the Chargers in front 8-6.
Â
The guests then responded with three straight to back up 9-8 with 14:18 on the clock in the fourth quarter, and after Coppinger scored his second of the game to tie it, Kyle Hunziker put Brevard back up at 10-9 to eventually create the late-game drama.
Â
Michl McNeil earned the victory in goal for the Chargers, making 16 saves.
Â
For the contest, Brevard outshot UAH 41-33 while holding a 26-22 advantage in shots on goal. The Tornados also collected 37 ground balls to UAH's 34 and were successful on 18 of their 21 clearing attempts, while UAH was 19-for-24 in clears.
Â
The Chargers will now be off until March 5 when the team plays its first road game of the season, traveling to North Greenville for a 4 p.m. contest in Tigerville, South Carolina.
