UAH Splits Doubleheader at West Georgia Saturday

CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team split the doubleheader on Saturday at West Georgia to open a Gulf South Conference three-game series, taking the first game 6-4 and dropping the night cap 11-2. UAH moves to 10-5 (4-1 GSC), while UWG sits at 9-3 (2-3 GSC).

Game one
The Wolves led early in the series opener with two runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 lead, but UAH starting pitcher Wilson Adams (3-1) settled down the UWG offense in the ensuing five frames to finish with 7.0 innings of work, two earned runs allowed and six strikeouts.

Centerfielder Wright Hackett helped the Chargers cut into the lead in the fourth with a RBI single to center, and went on to reduce the deficit to two runs with a RBI double down the right field line in the top of the sixth.

Michael Fox was able to tie the contest following Hackett's double in the sixth with a two-RBI single to center to make it a 4-4 ballgame.

Reigning GSC Freshman of the Year AJ Walden delivered the Chargers key base knock in the top of the ninth to take a decisive 6-4 lead with a two-run double to left-center scoring both Austin Sanders and Zach Dugas on the play.

The Chargers notched a total of 10 hits in the contest, led by Walden with a 3-for-5 performance with one run scored and two RBI. Hackett and Fox each added two hits and two RBI in the victory.

Game two
UAH led early into the second game on Saturday with Trey Mathis and Justin Cantrell each providing RBI base knocks in the first inning, but West Georgia quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

The Wolves went on to add four runs in the second and third innings for a 10-2 lead before making it an 11-2 final with one more run in the fifth.

Will Myers took the loss on the mound in the game, after tossing 2.2 innings with eight runs allowed – two earned – and two walks. Myers slips to 3-1 with the loss.

Hackett paced the UAH offense – which had nine hits in the night cap – with a 3-for-4 performance out of the leadoff spot.

The two teams will cap off the three-game set tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
