Gardner Notches Senior Day Triple-Double as UAH Rolls

PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | Greg Gardner posted a triple-double on his Senior Day, the team passed the century mark for the fifth time this season, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball squad rolled to a 108-88 victory over rival North Alabama on the regular season's last day. UAH improves to 21-6 (18-4 Gulf South Conference), while UNA slips to 16-12 (13-9 GSC). The Chargers now turn their focus to the postseason as the team opens up play in the 2016 GSC Men's Basketball Championships at home on Tuesday when the top seed welcomes No. 8 seed Shorter. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.

The contest on Saturday marked the final regular season home contest for UAH's trio of seniors Gardner, Preston Herring, and Spencer Palmer, and each played significant roles in the victory.

Gardner turned in a stunning performance, scoring 14, dishing out 14 assists, and grabbing 10 rebounds to become just the 16th player to record a triple-double this year in Division II this year and is the only GSC player to perform the feat. Additionally, he is the first Chargers to do it since fellow Indiana product Conner Blasi accomplished it on Feb. 13, 2014.

Matching him in points was Herring who scored 14 on a strong 6-of-7 night from the field, and Palmer grabbed eight rebounds, dished out a pair of assists, and scored five.

The Chargers were led on the night in scoring by Seab Webster who scored 20, while Tanner Finley scored 14, Brandon Roberts added 11, and Troy Saxton chipped in with 10 to give the hosts six that reached double figures.

UAH led for all by 14 seconds in the contest, and that was the amount of time it took the team to score its first points as Webster scored the game's first eight points to help his team open the game on a 22-6 run over less than five minutes. The Lions would close the gap to as few as seven, but the Chargers led 60-51 at the half.

The Chargers then weathered the biggest push UNA through at them all night as a 15-1 run over four minutes in the second half pulled the guests to within five at 72-67 with 12:32 left, but UAH then scored the next eight points to put the lead into double digits for good.

UAH shot the ball well on the night, connecting on 55.6 percent of its attempts including a terrific 16-for-34 showing from 3-point land, and the team held North Alabama to a 33.3 percent mark from the field.

The Chargers dished out a season-best 28 assists.
