HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team wrapped up the season-opening series against Sunshine State Conference affiliate No. 14 Nova Southeastern with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park, falling in game one 7-4 and taking the nightcap 10-5. UAH now stands at 1-3 on the year, while NSU boasts a 3-4 record.

Zach Dugas from third and a sac fly by
Parker Farley that plated
Matt Spruill, which gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
The Sharks would overtake the Chargers advantage with a three-run third, but UAH bounced back to tied it at 3-3 in the bottom half after Spruill drew a bases loaded walk. Both teams traded runs in the fourth frame to bring the game to a 4-4 score, but a key three-run homer in the seventh by NSU's Michael Hernandez put the visitors in front 7-4 which would stand as the final score.
After early struggles by UAH starting pitcher
Gabe Gunter, who posted 2.2 innings with three runs and five walks,
Logan Crook was able to quell the NSU bats with scoreless innings in the fifth, sixth and eight frames. However, Crook took the loss to drop his season record to 0-1 after being tagged with the go-ahead three-run home run.
The Chargers managed a total of seven hits in the game, led by
Trey Mathis with a 2-for-4 performance with a walk. Dugas also had a strong performance with two runs scored, one hit and two walks.
Game twoBoth squads went scoreless in the early going with a scoreless tie through the initial two frames, but each team would score in the third inning to make it a 1-1 tie. NSU broke the scoreless tie in the ensuing inning with one run plated, but the Chargers would erupt for a nine-run fourth inning to take a commanding 10-1 advantage.
Wright Hackett started the scoring effort in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle, followed by Mathis scoring on a wild pitch in the following at-bat.
Tanner Gardner and Spruill proceeded to post RBI in their at bats, before Dugas broke it open with a two RBI single through the left side. An
Austin Sanders RBI double made it a seven eight-run rally, before a rare two-RBI sac fly by
AJ Walden capped off the UAH fourth inning.
The Sharks were able to pull within five runs at 10-5, which went on to be the final score, after a three-run homer by Austin Pereira in the fifth inning. Freshman
Taylor Clemons out of the bullpen to hold NSU scoreless over 2.2 innings of work with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Will Myers earned his first win in the Blue and White with a 4.1-inning performance to go along with five hits, four earned runs and five strikeouts.
UAH returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at Charger Park with a nonconference series against Tuskegee. First pitch is at noon on Saturday for the doubleheader.
