CLEVELAND, Miss. | The No. 20 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against Delta State on Saturday by scores of 7-1 and 9-2 to open the three-game Gulf South Conference series. UAH slips to 17-10 (9-5 GSC), while DSU improves to 16-9 (9-5 GSC).
Game oneDelta State jumped on the board early in the opening contest of three-game set, plating one run in the bottom of the first off UAH starting pitcher
Wilson Adams for a 1-0 lead.
Despite UAH going scoreless in the ensuing two innings, Adams was able to quell the Statesmen offense posting zeros in the bottom of the second and third inning.
However, a pair of runs by DSU in the fourth extended the lead to 3-0 prior to the Chargers slimming the advantage to two as
Austin Sanders drove in
Tanner Gardner on a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth.
Two more runs by the Statesmen in the bottom of the sixth spelled the end of Adams outing, finishing the day with 5.0 innings, two strikeouts and five runs allowed. Adams' record slips to 4-2 with the loss.
Austin Whitlock came on in relief of Adams to finish the game with 3.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed and one strikeout, allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game to its 7-1 final.
The Chargers notched a total of five hits in the series opener, led by
AJ Walden with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate while
Matt Spruill had a team-high two walks.
Game twoThe Statesmen took the first lead of the contest in game two on Saturday with one run in the second after both squads went scoreless in the opening frame.
UAH rebounded quickly to tie the game at 1-1 with a run off a
Tanner Gardner RBI groundout to second that plated
Justin Cantrell in the top of the third, but DSU quickly negated the Charger run with one of their own in the bottom of the third.
Delta State went on to take a commanding 7-1 lead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth, before UAH added its second run of the game on a sac fly by
Wright Hackett to drive in
Austin Sanders from third.
The hosts added two runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to taking the nightcap of the doubleheader 9-2.
Will Myers was handed the loss in the start after hurling 3.2 innings with seven runs allowed and two walks.
The Chargers and Statesmen will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
