CLEVELAND, Miss. | The No. 20 University of Alabama in Huntsville team lost at Delta State on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Gulf South Conference series by a final score of 11-4. UAH dips to 17-11 (9-6 GSC), while DSU improves to 17-9 (10-5 GSC).
After setting down the initial five batters DSU of the game, UAH starting pitcher
Heath McRae allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to Delta State before the Statesmen went on to add two more runs in the fourth to make it a 4-0 lead for the hosts.
Delta State added to its lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth, prior to a three-run home run by redshirt sophomore
AJ Walden in the top of the sixth that cut the Statesmen lead to 5-2. Walden now has a team-high eight home runs on the season.
However, a five-run rally for the Statesmen in the bottom half of the frame gave DSU a commanding 10-3 lead over the Blue and White.
The hosts went on to score one in the seventh as UAH plated a run of their own in the top of the eighth to bring the game to its 11-4 final score. McRae was issued the loss in the contest after throwing 4.1 innings with four earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts to drop his season record to 3-1.
UAH managed a total of 14 hits in the loss on Sunday, with
Michael Fox pacing the effort with a 3-for-4 performance. Walden – who is now on a 17-game hit streak – ended the contest going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs, three RBI and one walk.
The Chargers look ahead to a three-game GSC series at Shorter in the coming weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m. and capping off on Saturday with a single game at noon.
