ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team won both games of the doubleheader at Shorter on Friday by scores of 11-1 and 7-4 to open the three-game Gulf South Conference series. UAH improves to 19-11 (11-6 GSC), while SU dips to 10-18 (4-13 GSC).
Game oneThe Chargers had a dominating performance in the series opener on both sides of the ball, with the offense amassing 11 runs on 12 hits and
Wilson Adams hurling a career-high 11 strikeouts over 8.0 innings with one run allowed.
After a scoreless first, the Chargers jumped on the board with a three-run second inning to take an early lead.
Trey Mathis put UAH on the board first with a solo homer to center field, prior to a RBI double to right by
Ben Rhodes and a RBI single to center by
Tanner Gardner.
The Blue and White added two more runs for a 5-0 lead in the following frame as
Austin Sanders scored from third on a throwing error by Shorter's catcher before
Zach Dugas drove in
AJ Walden on a single to left.
Adams' shutout bid came to a close in the bottom of the third inning as Shorter plated its lone run of the contest, despite the right-hander accruing seven of his 11 strikeouts in the initial three innings.
The Chargers would negate Shorter's tally with one run in the top of the fourth as the squad successfully completed a double steal with Rhodes stealing home on the play.
Both sides would go scoreless from the fifth through the seventh inning, but UAH ended that string with three runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth en route to the 11-1 victory. Sanders launched his fourth homer of 2016 in the ninth-inning rally.
Adams improves to 5-2 with the victory, and has now pitched 7.0 innings with six or more strikeouts on five occasions in 2016.
Dugas led the way for the offense with a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI, while Mathis finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs, two RBI and one walk.
Game twoBoth sides went scoreless in the first for the second time on Friday, before the Chargers rallied for three in the top of the second as Rhodes ripped a two-RBI double and was immediately driven in on Gardner's single to right field.
The Blue and White were able to extend their lead to 7-0 with an additional four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a three-RBI double by Michael fox with the bases loaded.
However, Shorter posted its largest rally of the afternoon with four runs in the bottom half of the third off UAH starting pitcher
Heath McRae to slim the Chargers lead to 7-4.
McRae was able to settle down the Hawks bats in the ensuing innings to post zeros in from the fourth through the sixth inning, with the Chargers also going scoreless in that span. The sophomore ended the contest with 6.0 innings, four earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts and improved to 4-1 this season with the win.
Austin Whitlock replaced McRae for the seventh inning, hurling a scoreless frame for the 7-4 victory and earning his first save with UAH.
The Chargers and Hawks will wrap up the three-game set tomorrow with a single game scheduled for a noon CST first pitch.
