HUNTSVILLE | In head coach
Hunter Royer's 199th and 200th victory on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park, The No. 15 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Christian Brothers by final scores of 15-0 and 5-0 to open the three-game series. UAH improved to 14-5 (7-1 GSC), while CBU slips to 5-13 (0-8 GSC).
Game oneUAH dominated the series opener over Christian Brothers, as the squad compiled a total of 16 base knocks in the contest which included nine extra-base hits.
Matt Spruill led the way from the leadoff spot with a 4-for-5 performance with three runs scored and two RBI.
The Chargers were first on the board in the bottom of the first after UAH starter
Wilson Adams worked a scoreless opening frame, as Spruill and
Zach Dugas led off the game with back-to-back solo home runs to give the Blue and White a 2-0 advantage.
Spruill added to the lead with a RBI single in the second, before the Chargers posted three runs in the third on a RBI double by
Austin Sanders and a two-run homer by
AJ Walden.
UAH went on to score four in the fourth, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple from
Wright Hackett to make it a 10-0 advantage over the Buccaneers. The game would come to its 15-0 final, which ended in seven innings, in the bottom of the fifth with the Blue and White plating an additional five runs on a RBI single by Walden and a grand slam by
Trey Mathis.
Wilson Adams improved to 3-1 with the win after twirling 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.
Austin Whitlock and
Landon Boggs provided the final 2.0 shutout frames out of the bullpen in the opening win.
Game twoThe Chargers benefitted from a stellar outing from starting pitcher
Will Myers, who held a no-hitter through 6.2 innings in the second game on Friday afternoon. Myers pitched the full 7.0 innings with one hit allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts, improving to 4-1 on the 2016 campaign.
UAH scored first again in the night cap, as the Blue and White posted three runs in the third on a
Wright Hackett sac fly to center and a two-RBI single up the middle by Tanner Garnder.
Walden added another run for the Chargers effort in the fourth with a RBI double down the left field line, before Hackett brought the game to its 5-0 final with his second triple of the day in the sixth to plate Mathis.
Gardner led the UAH offense at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with a pair of RBI, while
Austin Sanders and Spruill each added two base hits.
The Chargers and Buccaneers will wrap up the three-game series at Charger Park on Sunday at 1 p.m.
