HUNTSVILLE | The No. 15 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep of visiting Christian Brothers in seven innings on Sunday by a final score of 10-0 at Charger Park. UAH improves 15-5 (8-1 GSC), while CBU dips to 5-14 (0-9 GSC).
The Chargers – who did not allow a single run to the Bucs all weekend – were first on the board in the bottom of the third as
Zach Dugas plated
Tanner Gardner on a sacrifice fly to center field after UAH starting pitcher
Heath McRae worked scoreless frames in the top half of the first, second and third.
UAH followed the go-ahead run in the third with a four-run rally in the fourth inning on a
Wright Hackett two-run homer – his first as a Charger – and a two-RBI single by
Matt Spruill.
With the 5-0 advantage, the Chargers proceeded to plate three more in the fifth as
AJ Walden scored on a throwing error before
Michael Fox and Spruill notched run-scoring singles to make it an 8-0 lead.
The contest was brought to its 10-0 final in the bottom of the sixth with
Austin Sanders and Walden scoring on consecutive wild pitches by CBU reliever Will Rutledge.
The Blue and White totaled 15 hits in the contest led by Spruill with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the dish with three RBI. Walden also had a strong day at the plate with a game-high two doubles and three runs scored to go along with a walk.
McRae improved to 3-0 on the 2016 season after tossing 5.0 shutout innings with just one hit allowed, two walks and a season-best six strikeouts.
Logan Crook and
Chris Kilpatrick each tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen en route to the 10-0 victory.
The Chargers look ahead to four games in the coming week beginning with a nonconference matchup at Montevallo on Wednesday at 5 p.m., before returning home to reenter GSC play against West Florida on Saturday and Sunday.
