MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The No. 9 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team topped Montevallo on Wednesday evening by a final score of 7-5 in a nonconference midweek matchup. UAH rises to 16-5, while UM dips to 12-10.
UAH totaled 13 base hits on the afternoon with redshirt junior
Austin Sanders leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance with two runs scored and two RBI, followed by
Zach Dugas with three hits and two runs.
The Chargers jumped on the board early in the top of the first as Sanders notched a two-run homer to plate Dugas on the play for a 2-0 lead.
However, Montevallo rebounded for three runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-2 lead, but the Blue and White were able to post single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth frames to maintain a 6-3 advantage over the Falcons.
After starting pitcher
Gabe Gunter allowed three runs in the first, UAH received an impeccable long-relief performance from
Logan Crook who tossed the ensuing 7.2 innings with two earned runs, four hits and five strikeouts. Crook earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season.
After both squads went scoreless from the sixth through the eighth inning, sophomore
Ben Rhodes ripped his second home run of the season to right field in the top of the ninth to extend the Chargers lead to 7-2.
Chris Kilpatrick earned his third save of the season after finishing off the contest out of the bullpen in the ninth inning, despite allowing a two-run double to Dane Hutcheon in the bottom half of the ninth to bring the game to its 7-5 final.
UAH jumps back into Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a visit from West Florida for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday at Charger Park. First pitch slated for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
