VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team dropped the series finale at Gulf South Conference opponent Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 11-9. UAH dips to 25-15 (15-9 GSC), while VSU improves to 24-12 (15-7 GSC).
After a scoreless opening frame for both sides, the Chargers took the first lead of the game with one run in the top of the second as
Michael Fox was able to score on a fielding error by VSU shortstop Ryan Slaughter.
In the bottom half of the second, the Blazers took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the frame, which was quickly negated with one Charger run in the top of the third on a sac fly from
Trey Mathis.
However, Valdostas State went on to rally for three runs in the third and another tally in the fourth to own a 6-2 advantage over UAH.
The Chargers slimmed the lead to 6-4 on a two-run homer by
AJ Walden – his 10th of the season – in the top of the fifth, while the Blazers extended the advantage to 7-4 in the bottom half with a single run.
The Blue and White would again score two runs in the ensuing inning as
Ben Rhodes ripped a two-RBI triple down the right-field line to cut the VSU lead to 7-6.
Valdosta State went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, but would erupt for a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 11-6 lead.
The Chargers made a late push in the ninth with a trio of runs – highlighted by a two-RBI single from Mathis – but the rally would fall short as VSU went on to win 11-9.
Walden paced the Blue and White's offense with a 4-for-5 performance with two RBI and two runs scored, while Mathis finished the day 2-for-4 with a team-best three RBI.
UAH starting pitcher Heath McCrae took the loss on Sunday to slip his season record to 5-2, totaling 3.0 innings with five earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action next weekend with a visit from Mississippi College for a three-game series at Charger Park as a doubleheader is slated for Saturday and a single game on tap for Sunday.
