HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team took both games of the doubleheader against Mississippi College by scores of 5-2 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park to open a three-game Gulf South Conference series. UAH improves to 27-15 (17-9 GSC), while MC dips to 12-25 (5-2 GSC).
Game oneThe Chargers benefitted from a stellar starting performance by right-hander
Wilson Adams in the series opener, as the senior hurled 8.0 innings with one run allowed and five strikeouts compared to one walk in a 112-pitch outing to improve to 8-2 on the year. Adams has now pitched 7.0 innings or more with one run allowed in each of his past four starts, and has lowered his season ERA to a GSC-leading 2.01 during the span.
After a scoreless top of the first, UAH was able to take the early lead over Mississippi College as
AJ Walden lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the opening frame to plate
Ben Rhodes from third for a 1-0 advantage.
Both sides would go scoreless from the second through the fourth inning, but the Chargers were able to push the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth as Walden notched his second RBI of the day on a single to right-center before
Trey Mathis scored
Austin Sanders from third on a sac fly.
UAH went on to score one run in the sixth with
Michael Fox scoring on a wild pitch, prior to Mathis extending the lead to 5-0 with a RBI single through the left side.
Mississippi College was able to cut the Chargers lead to 5-2 in the top of the ninth as Colton Caver notched a two-run homer off UAH reliever
Austin Whitlock, but the right-hander proceeded to finish off the game en route to the 5-2 series-opening victory.
Sanders paced the offense with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored, while Mathis and Walden shared the team lead with two RBI.
Game twoThe second game on Saturday was a pitcher's duel for the majority of the contest as neither team scored until the seventh inning, with UAH starting pitcher
Will Myers working an efficient 7.0 innings with one run, one walk and a season-high 11 strikeouts and MC starting hurler Samuel Harrison matching Myers with 6.0 innings, five hits allowed, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
After an initial seven scoreless innings of play, the Choctaws were able to take the first lead of the game with one run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Logan Ferrell.
Undeterred, the Chargers proceeded to board the first three batters in the bottom half of the seventh prior to
Wright Hackett tying the game on a RBI infield single to knot the game at 1-1. UAH was able to complete the comeback victory in walk-off fashion in the ensuing at bat as
Zach Dugas notched a RBI single to center to give the Blue and White the 2-1 win.
Sanders led the UAH bats with a 1-for-2 performance with one run scored and one walk in the nightcap on Saturday, while a total of seven Chargers recording one base hit apiece in the contest.
The Chargers and Choctaws will matchup tomorrow for the series finale at Charger Park. First pitch slated for 1 p.m.
