HUNTSVILLE |The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams closed out the regular season campaign at home Tuesday against Martin Methodist with the women winning 8-1 and the men falling 5-4. The women enter the postseason with a 10-10 mark, while the men end the regular season at 2-18.
The attention now turns to the 2016 Gulf South Conference Championships which start Thursday in Montgomery, Alabama. The women's team owns the No. 4 seed and will take on fifth-seeded North Alabama at 1:30 p.m., while the men's team is the No. 8 seed and will face top-seeded West Florida at 9 a.m.
In the women's match, the Chargers picked up a pair of points in doubles play including an 8-1 win by the No. 2 pairing of
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Sarah Stearman, and the team then went on to sweep the singles points to comfortably win the match.
Remmerswaal won without dropping a game as she was victorious 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth position, and
Marta Briega won 6-3, 6-0 at the fourth position. At the top spot and the No. 3 contest,
Cristina Cabanas and
Madison Gulick both won 7-5 in their opening sets with Cabanas claiming a 6-2 win in the second and Gulick taking a 6-4 victory.
At the second spot, Stearman won a 6-0, 7-5 decision.
In the men's match, UAH secured three points in singles play as
Rodrigo Palomino and
Harrison Stone relatively cruised at the third and fourth positions, respectively, as Palomino was a 6-3, 6-0 winner with Stone winning 6-2, 6-1.
The Chargers also captured the point in the No. 5 singles match as
Noah Pring won 7-6, 6-0.
