UAH Cruises to a 17-4, Sweep-Clinching Win over MC

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep of visiting Mississippi College by a score of 17-4 in seven innings at Charger Park on Sunday afternoon. UAH improves to 28-15 (18-9 GSC), while MC dips to 13-26 (5-21 GSC).

The Chargers offense was led by AJ Walden who went 2-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and a season-high six RBI, followed by Ben Rhodes with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with three runs scored, three RBI and one double.

After a scoreless first inning by UAH starting pitcher Heath McRae, the Blue and White jumped on the board in the home half of the opening frame as Rhodes scored on an error before Walden plated Matt Spruill on a sac fly to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Mississippi College would dig into the UAH lead with one run of its own in the top of the second, but UAH proceeded to erupt for a seven run rally in the bottom half which featured a two-RBI triple by Austin Sanders, a two-run homer by Walden and a solo shot by Trey Mathis to give UAH a commanding 9-1 lead.

Both sides went on to add one run apiece in the fourth inning to make it a 10-2 Charger advantage, with the Blue and White going on to score three runs in the fifth and another four in the sixth to extend the lead to 17-2. Walden notched his second homer of the game – a three-run blast – in the fifth, while Spruill recorded a two-run home run in the sixth for his fourth round-tripper of 2016.

The Choctaws posted two runs in the seventh off UAH reliever Landon Boggs to slim the lead to 17-4, but the Chargers would hold on for the sweep-clinching victory.

McRae earned the win in the contest to improve his season record to 6-2, after tossing 5.0 innings with two runs allowed and two strikeouts.

UAH looks ahead to a three-game series against Union next weekend in Jackson, Tennessee, with a doubleheader slated for Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
