UAH Wins Two in the Doubleheader at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team won both games of the doubleheader at Union by scores of 5-2 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to open the three-game Gulf South Conference series. UAH improves to 30-15 (20-9 GSC), while UU slips to 18-24 (10-18 GSC).

Game one
UAH benefitted from another stellar starting performance by senior Wilson Adams, who hurled 7.2 innings with two runs allowed, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Adams improves to 9-2 with the victory.

After both teams went scoreless for the initial five innings of play, the Chargers broke through with a sac fly by Austin Sanders that plated Matt Spruill for a 1-0 lead in the sixth.

The Blue and White were able to pile onto the advantage with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh in which Zach Dugas, Tanner Gardner and Spruill notched RBI, prior to a RBI double by Trey Mathis in the eighth to make it a 5-0 UAH lead.

Union drew within 5-2 with two runs in the eighth off Adams, but Chris Kilpatrick came on to end the frame and Taylor Clemons relieved Kilpatrick to work a scoreless ninth for the 5-2 victory. Clemons notched his seventh save of the season in his three-strikeout performance.

Spruill led the UAH bats in game one going 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI, followed by Michael Fox and Mathis with two base hits apiece.

Game two
Another strong performance on the hill helped the Chargers to the doubleheader sweep, as left-hander Will Myers tossed 7.0 shutout innings with 13 strikeouts and zero walks to improve his record to 7-4.

UAH quickly jumped on the board in the first inning as Spruill gave the Blue and White an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run, which was his fifth homer in the 2016 campaign.

The Chargers were able to score another run in the top of the second to make it 2-0 UAH, with Gardner scoring on a stolen-base attempt at second by Rhodes.

Both squads would go scoreless from that point on as the Chargers took the nightcap 2-0. Union starting hurler Marty Coursey also had a successful performance on the mound with 7.0 innings, six strikeouts, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts.

UAH and Union will wrap up this three-game series tomorrow with the series finale starting at 1 p.m.
