HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team will open up play at the 2016 Gulf South Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon in Florence at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park as the fourth-seeded Chargers will take on No. 5 seed Delta State at 12:30 p.m.
Â
UAH enters the game with a 38-13 record, while Delta State is 33-18.
Â
The Chargers have a storied history at the GSC tournament, reaching the postseason event in each of the program's 21 seasons, and the squad has won eight championships while going 66-26 all-time at the championships.
Â
Against Delta State in the tournament, UAH is 13-2 all-time including a 1-0 victory in an elimination game a season ago.
Â
The Chargers are led by a quartet of all-conference selections including the nation's leader in RBI in
Kaitlyn Bannister who owns 80 on the year after her incredible weekend at Union last week, and she was joined on the All-GSC First Team by pitcher
Tyler Harrison and designated player
Abby Roberts while catcher
Taylor Wascavage earned Second Team honors.
Â
Those players and their teammates will be attempting on Thursday to exact a bit of revenge for the regular season series matchup with the Lady Statesmen that saw DSU sweep the doubleheader before UAH secured a 7-0 victory in the series finale.
Â
Those results allowed Delta State to cut into UAH's advantage in the all-time series which the Chargers now lead 40-14.
Â
Delta State had three honorees on the all-conference teams that were announced on Tuesday, including a pair of First Team choices in Kaitlin Moore and Kassidy Tally.
Â
Moore is hitting a team-best .424 for the Lady Statesmen and has used 21 doubles, two triples and two home runs to rack up 50 RBI, while Tally hits at a .379 clip to get on base where she is most dangerous, stealing 67 bags in 71 attempts.
Â
The team features a staff ERA of 3.07 with Taylor Johnson leading the team with 13 wins, while both Katie Justice and Taylor Tucker both join her with 39 strikeouts. Justice owns the team's best ERA at 2.63.
Â
The winner of Thursday's game will turn around to play top-seeded UNA at 5:30 p.m. that evening, while the non-victorious side will play in an elimination contest on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
