UAH Completes Series Sweep of North Alabama

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team shutout rival North Alabama by a score of 6-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete the three-game Gulf South Conference series sweep at Charger Park. UAH improves to 22-13 (14-7 GSC), while UNA dips to 15-17 (8-13 GSC).

The Chargers benefitted from a dominant performance by starting pitcher Heath McRae, who worked 8.2 scoreless innings with five hits allowed and seven strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the year.

UAH took the early lead with one run in the bottom of the first after McRae tossed his first scoreless frame, as AJ Walden lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Matt Spruill from third.

The hosts would then go ahead 2-0 with one run in the second on a RBI single by Tanner Gardner prior to both sides going scoreless in the third and fourth innings.

The Blue and White went on to add two runs in the fifth on a RBI double by Walden and a run-scoring single by Wright Hackett to extend the lead to 4-0, before adding another two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by Trey Mathis and Zach Dugas to bring the game to its 6-0 final.

UAH totaled 12 hits in the contest, led by Austin Sanders and Hackett who each had 3-for-4 performances at the plate. Walden finished with a game-high two RBI, while Spruill paced the squad with two walks.

The Chargers have a total of five games on tap in the coming week, beginning with midweek home games slated against Montevallo on Wednesday and Miles on Thursday. UAH jumps back into GSC play next weekend with a trip to Valdosta State.
