HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened the week's slate with a 3-0 victory over Montevallo at Charger Park on Wednesday afternoon in a nonconference matchup. UAH improves to 23-13, while UM slips to 20-19.
Will Myers had a stellar starting performance in the victory on Wednesday with a season-best 8.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed and 10 strikeouts, with the southpaw holding the Falcons hitless over his initial 7.2 innings of work.
The Chargers were first on the board in the contest as
Matt Spruill scored from third on a fielding error by Montevallo third baseman Collin Dupree in the bottom of the first to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
Both sides would then go scoreless from the second through the fourth inning, prior to UAH plating two in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by a RBI double by
AJ Walden to extend the lead to 3-0. Walden now has nine doubles this season.
Myers – who tossed 124 pitches in the outing – was relieved at the outset of the ninth inning with freshman
Taylor Clemons coming on to secure the Blue and White's second consecutive shutout. Clemons notched his fifth save of the season after closing out the game, while Myers improved to 5-4 with the victory.
UAH managed a total of six hits in the contest, led by
Tanner Gardner and Walden with two base hits apiece.
Wright Hackett recorded the Chargers second extra-base hit of the game with his sixth double of the year in the bottom of the sixth.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow with a visit from Miles, as first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
