VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team split the doubleheader at Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon to open the three-game Gulf South Conference series, taking the opener 3-1 before falling in the night cap 14-5. UAH now sits at 25-14 (15-8 GSC), while VSU is 23-12 (14-7 GSC).
Game oneWilson Adams improved to 7-2 on the season after his third start with at least 7.0 innings and 10 or more strikeouts, as the right-hander worked 7.2 frames with one run allowed, five hits allowed and fanned 10 batters.
UAH took the first lead of the game in the opening inning with a RBI double by
Wright Hackett down the right field line that plated
AJ Walden, prior to the Chargers extending the lead to 2-0 as
Ben Rhodes scored on a fielding error in the top of the second.
Both sides went scoreless from the third through seventh innings, but UAH was able to stop that string of zeros on a RBI double from
Trey Mathis in the top of the eighth to push the advantage to 3-0.
Valdosta State plated its lone run of the contest off Adams in the top of the eighth, before freshman
Taylor Clemons came on in relief to toss the final 1.1 innings en route to the 3-1 victory and his sixth save of the season.
Mathis led the UAH offense with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with one RBI and a pair of doubles.
Game twoUAH would again take the initial lead in the night cap of the doubleheader on a RBI double to left-center by
Trey Mathis in the top of the first, but Valdosta State quickly overtook the lead with a three-run rally in the bottom half to own a 3-1 advantage.
The Chargers were able to regain the lead at 4-3 in the second inning with a trio of runs as the Blue and White scored twice on a fielding error by VSU and
Austin Sanders lifted a sac fly to plate
Parker Farley from third.
After a single Blazer run in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 4-4, the hosts' offense went on to take control of the contest with a four run rally in the third, one run in the fourth and five runs in the sixth to own a commanding 14-4 lead.
UAH brought the contest to its 14-5 final with one run in the top of the seventh on a Mathis sac fly that plated Sanders.
Senior
Chris Kilpatrick took the loss in the night cap, after starting the game with 2.1 innings pitched, five earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Kilpatrick dips to 1-2 on the season.
Ben Rhodes paced the UAH bats with a 3-for-3 performance at the dish with one run scored and one double, while Mathis notched a team-best two RBI.
The Chargers and Blazers will wrap up the three-game set tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST.
