UAH Drops GSC Tournament Opener vs. Delta State

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team fell to Delta State in the opening matchup of the 2016 Gulf South Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 7-2 at Jim Spooner Field on the campus of host West Florida.

UAH will now play in an elimination game Sunday at 11 a.m. against the loser of today's Lee/West Florida matchup.

The Chargers fell behind early as the Statesmen scored one run in the bottom of the first, but UAH was able to rebound with one run in the second on a RBI single up the middle by Tanner Gardner.

However, Delta State's Colton Welch broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom half of the second with a solo home run, prior to DSU rallying for three in the fifth and adding two runs in the seventh to extend its lead to 7-1.

The Blue and White cut into the Statesmen lead with one run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single to right by Walden, but the Chargers would eventually drop the opening matchup 7-2.

UAH starting pitcher Wilson Adams saw his record slip to 10-3 on year, after tossing 5.0 innings with five runs allowed, 12 hits and four strikeouts.

The Blue and White recorded 11 base hits in the contest, led by Ben Rhodes' 3-for-5 performance with one run scored. Michael Fox and Gardner each recorded two hits in the contest as well.
