No. 21 UAH Drops Road Contest at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. | The No. 21 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team fell on Saturday, dropping a 90-81 decision to host Delta State. UAH slips to 11-4 (7-2 GSC), while DSU improves to 12-3 (7-2 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After a pair of Brandon Roberts free throws pulled UAH within one at 80-79 with 3:00 left in the game, Delta State scored nine straight over the next more than two minutes to go ahead 89-79 with 49 seconds left to seal the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Roberts led the Chargers on the day as he was 6-of-12 from the floor on his way to scoring 20, and the senior was also 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
-Four other UAH players scored in double figures with Kip Owens hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 13, and he was joined in double digits by Troy Saxton with 12, Chayse Elliott with 11, and Seab Webster with 10.
-Webster also led the team on the glass as he grabbed six rebounds.
-Devin Schmidt scored 47 to lead the Statesmen.
-On the day, Delta State outshot UAH by a 54.8 percent to 48.3 percent margin, and DSU held a 37-27 advantage on the glass with Schmidt grabbing a team-best nine boards.
-UAH was strong inside, outscoring the hosts 36-26 in the paint, and the Charger bench outscored DSU's reserves 20-11.
-The game totaled nine ties and 10 lead changes.
 
Inside the Flow
-First half saw three lead changes and five ties, and neither team was able to lead by more than six in the opening 20 minutes with the Chargers going in front by that total first, grabbing a 25-19 lead at the 6:47 mark before Delta State was able to go on a 15-3 run over nearly five minutes to go up 34-28 at the 2:35 mark.
-The Chargers then held the Statesmen scoreless over the remainder of the period, with Elliott scoring eight of UAH's 10 points in a 10- run as the guests went into the locker room on top 38-34.
-UAH would quickly jump out to a nine-point lead – its largest in the game – after a Roberts bucket and an Owens triple made it 43-34 at the 18:17 mark, and the team would stay in front of in a tie until DSU went ahead 59-58 with 9:06 left in the game.
-Six of the game's lead changes then came over the next three minutes, but Delta State went ahead 75-74 after a Schmidt layup fell with 4:08 remaining, and though Justin Ward would tie it at 77-77 with 3:40 remaining, the late run by the hosts put the game away.
 
Noteworthy
-For Roberts, the 20-point performance matches his season-high as he also scored 20 points against North Alabama on Dec. 4, and his season scoring average is now at 13.9 points per contest which is second on the team.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers return to Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Thursday where they will host visiting Shorter. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
