UAH Falls in Overtime on Sunday at Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team fell on Sunday in overtime, dropping a 102-96 decision to host Tampa. UAH slips to 1-1 on the year, while UT improves to 2-0.

Turning Point
-Tampa outscored UAH 16-10 in the extra period, going 14-for-14 at the charity stripe where for the game the Spartans were awarded an astonishing 45 trips.

Inside the Box Score
-Justin Ward again led the Chargers as he scored 21 points while grabbing four rebounds, and he was joined in double figures by five other players including Malik Cook-Stroupe who was 6-for-7 from the field with four 3-pointers while scoring 17.
-Tanner Finley added 13 for UAH, while both Chayse Elliott and redshirt freshman Seth Swalved added 12, and Kip Owens rounded out the double-figure scoring group with 11.
-Pacing the Spartans was Duke Shelton who scored 31 and grabbed 16 rebounds.
-For the contest, UAH shot 49.2 percent compared to Tampa's 46.0 field goal percentage, and the Chargers knocked down 14 3-pointers while limiting the Spartans to just four.
-The significant difference in the game came at the free throw line as Tampa went 40-for-45 with the Chargers going 20-for-45.
-Tampa also established a 40-32 edge in rebounding.

Inside the Flow
-After a Ward triple opened the scoring, Tampa would go on a quick 5-0 run to grab a 5-3 lead at the 17:08 mark, but after Owens hit a trey on the next possession, the Chargers would not trail again in the half, building up as much as a 13-point advantage before going into the locker room at the break up 43-34.
-The hosts would narrow the gap to just five only 34 seconds into the second half, but UAH would push back ahead by 12 at 53-41 by the 15:09 mark of the period.
-Then with the Chargers leading 74-67 with 6:37 left in regulation, Tampa would go on a 17-6 run to go up by four at 84-80 with 2:06 on the clock, but UAH proceeded to score six straight to regain the lead at 86-84 after a pair of Elliott free throws.
-Pat Bacon then knocked down two at the line himself on the next possession, and though UAH got a great look right at the expiration of the period, the teams would go into overtime tied at 86-86.

Noteworthy
-Finely grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team, and that mark represents a career-best for the junior whose previous high was five against Christian Brothers in his freshman season.
-Ward has now led UAH in scoring in both games on the young season.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will open up the home portion of the 2017-18 schedule on Thursday when Trevecca Nazarene visits. Tip-off at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is slated for 7:30 p.m.
