UAH Edged by Trevecca Nazarene in Home Opener Thursday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team was edged in the home opener by a score of 65-62 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall by Trevecca Nazarene in a nonconference matchup Thursday. UAH dips to 2-1, while TNU improves to 2-1.
 
Turning Point
- A pair of successful free throws by Loren Foster slimmed the Trevecca Nazarene lead to three at 62-59 with 36 seconds to go, but the Trojans scored the ensuing three points to lead 65-59 before a three-pointer by Foster with time elapsing made it a 65-62 final in favor of the visitors.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Katie Speegle paced the Chargers offense with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the contest as well as a 9-for-10 mark from the free throw line.
- Baylee Johnson also had a strong scoring night with 16 points, while also playing a team-high 38 minutes in the matchup.
- UAH grabbed 38 rebounds as a team in the loss, with Chandler Elder, Johnson and Speegle tying for the team lead with seven apiece.
- Both Elder and Speegle also tied for a team-best three offensive rebounds.
- Elder additionally ended the game with three of the Chargers seven assists.
- Defensively, Aryn Sanders led the squad with two steals while freshman Emiline Payne had a team-high two blocks.
- UAH forced a total of 21 turnovers, with 11 coming in the first half followed by 10 in the second.
- The Chargers dominated points off turnovers at 16-4 as well as points in the paint at 36-22.
- The Blue & White had a bevy of success from the charity stripe, shooting 86.4 percent (19-22) at the line.
 
Inside the Flow
- Trevecca Nazarene started the contest on a 14-6 run over the initial 6:27 of play on Thursday, which UAH was able to slim down to a four-point lead at 16-12 at the end of the period thanks to a 6-2 run to close out the first quarter.
- The Trojans began to push the pace in the second quarter to lead by as much as 15 in the frame, with the visitors owning a 32-22 lead heading into the half.
- Both teams had a bevy of success scoring in the third quarter as both sides scored 18 points in the stanza to keep TNU ahead 10 at 50-40 entering the fourth quarter.
- The Chargers outscored the Trojans 15-9 in the initial 7:11 of play in the fourth quarter to cut the TNU lead to 59-55 with just over three minutes to go.
- UAH could not overcome the TNU advantage over the final three minutes as the Trojans outscored the Chargers 7-6 in the waning minutes for the 65-62 win.
 
Noteworthy
- Speegle's 21 points are a career-high for the sophomore, as she previously totaled 17 in a road contest at West Alabama (2/9) last season.
- Johnson has scored 15 or more points in all three games this season.
