UAH Falls at Montevallo in GSC Opener on Wednesday Night

MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team opened up conference play on Wednesday night, falling 80-56 at Montevallo. The Chargers slip to 5-2 (0-1 Gulf South Conference), while Montevallo improves to 5-3 (1-0 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-A 19-2 run early in the opening half over a span of just more than six minutes turned a three-point lead for Montevallo into a 20-point advantage at the 11:59 mark of the first half, and UAH could pull no closer than nine the rest of the way.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Freshman Seth Swalve led the Chargers in the contest as he scored 15, while Justin Ward also finished in double figures with 13.
-Ward also led UAH on the glass as he grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
-Jamaar Taylor led all scorers in the contest as he went 10-for-15 from the field and scored 31 to pace Montevallo.
-For the game, UAH shot 33.9 percent while the Falcons connected on 51.8 percent of their attempts including a 10-for-22 mark from 3-point land where the Chargers were 8-for-32.
-The guests won the battle on the glass, holding a slim 34-33 rebounding margin against UM.
 
Inside the Flow
-Montevallo scored the first five points of the game, and though the Chargers would make it 8-5 at the 18:07 mark, the Falcons then went on their first strong run of the game to put the hosts ahead by 20 at 27-7 with just under 12 minutes to go in the period.
-Six of Ward's points came on a pair of triples late in the first that allowed UAH to make it a nine-point game at 36-27 with 2:10 left in the half, but Montevallo scored eight straight to go up 44-27 at the half.
-In the second half, UAH would cut the Falcon lead to 12 at the 12:41 mark, but the hosts would allow the Chargers to pull no closer than that the rest of the way.
 
Noteworthy
-The 15 points for Swalve is a season high for the freshman, and he now is third on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game.
-UAH has now outrebounded the opposition in three straight games.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return to the hardwood on Sunday when the team ventures to West Alabama. Tip-off against the Tigers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
