Chargers Stumble at West Alabama on Sunday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team fell on Sunday evening, dropping a 82-66 decision to host West Alabama. The Chargers slip to 5-3 (0-2 Gulf South Conference), while UWA improves to 7-2 (2-0 GSC).

Turning Point
-West Alabama used a 10-minute stretch to close the first half in which the hosts outscored UAH 31-5 to take control of the contest.

Inside the Box Score
-Justin Ward led the Chargers as he scored 18 thanks to a 4-for-8 showing from beyond the arc, and he was joined in double figures by fellow seniors Chayse Elliott and Kip Owens who both scored 10.
-Owens added a team-best six rebounds, while Elliott led the Chargers with four assists.
-Josh Fleming led the Tigers and all scorers in the game with 25 points.
-For the contest, UWA shot 50.0 percent while the Chargers connected on 44.7 percent of its attempts, and it was UAH who won the rebounding battle by grabbing 30 boards to 28 for the Tigers.
-UAH turned it over 19 times, and the hosts capitalized on those miscues, outscoring the Chargers 26-6 in points off turnovers.

Inside the Flow
-UWA jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but the Chargers would then reel off a 13-0 run with an Elliott triple punctuating the run to put the guests up 16-7 at the 15:02 mark.
-The Tigers would then go on a strong spurt of their own, tying the contest at 18-18 before UAH would go back in front 23-18 just prior to the midway point of the half, but UWA's 31-5 spurt the rest of the way put the hosts ahead 49-28 at the break.
-The lead grew to as many as 24 for West Alabama as the Tigers held a 58-34 advantage at the 14:33 mark of the second half, but a 12-3 run would pull UAH back within 15 with 10:41 remaining in the game.
-West Alabama, however, would grow its lead back out to as many as 25 on its way to sealing the contest.

Noteworthy
-Ward has now led UAH in scoring in seven of the team's eight games.
-Elliott's four assists represent a season-best for the senior and match his career high which he set back on Dec. 19, 2015, against Lee.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will aim to bounce back on Tuesday when the team travels to Nashville to take on Trevecca Nazarene at 7 p.m. UAH was an 88-70 winner against TNU earlier this year in Huntsville.
