CONFERENCE OPENER: The 21st-ranked UAH softball team will begin Gulf South Conference action this weekend, making the quick trip up to Cleveland, Tennessee, to face Lee in a three-game set with Saturday's doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. CST while the series finale will begin at 1 p.m. CST on Sunday. The Chargers are 9-3 on the season heading into the first weekend of conference play.
Â
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Charger picked up a pair of splits – falling in the opener and winning the nightcap in both instances – at Nova Southeastern and Lynn before gutting out a doubleheader sweep of Barry on the team's last day on the Sunshine State swing.
Â
IN THE CIRCLE: Senior pitcher
Tyler Harrison is the reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week after she had a terrific trio of performances against the SSC schools which moved her record to 3-2 while lowering her ERA to a 1.15. On the season the Mobile, Alabama, native has struck out 34 batters in 30.1 innings pitched, and she has walked only three while allowing the opposition to hit just .200 off of her.
Â
LONG'S STRONG START: Freshman
Shannon Long has had a nice start to the season, appearing in 11 games for the Chargers while also earning five starts, and she has eight hits in 16 at-bats for a .500 average to go along with five RBI. Already on the year she has three multi-hit games, and her best day came on Feb. 5 when she was 2-for-2 with a homer while driving in four runs.
Â
FREE PASSES: After setting a program record with 237 walks a year ago, the Chargers are once again showing a patient approach at the plate having drawn a GSC-best 51 walks on the season.
Haley Thompson and
Taylor Wascavage lead the team as both have earned eight free trips to first, ranking them in a tie for third in the league individually.
Â
ABOUT THE FLAMES: Lee enters the weekend with a 9-3 record including a 4-0 mark in Cleveland. Offensively, Abby McKinney is raking for the Flames with a .600 average to go along with 15 RBI on the season, while in the circle, Leigh Beatenbough is 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA while striking out 22 in a team-high 32.2 innings pitched.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: UAH is 8-0 all-time against the Flames after sweeping a three-game set from them a year ago in Huntsville. Inclement weather in 2015 forced the movement of the series from Cleveland to the UAH campus, so this weekend will mark the first time the two teams have met in the Volunteer State.
