UAH Falls Twice in GSC-Opening Doubleheader at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team began Gulf South Conference play with a pair of losses  by scores of 5-2 and 3-1 in the series-opening doubleheader at Lee on Saturday afternoon. UAH slips to 2-7 (0-2 GSC), while LU improves to 8-1 (2-0 GSC).

Game Changer
- Jay Copeland went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Chargers with a team-high two runs scored and one walk.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Lee started the scoring in the series opener with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second to lead 3-0.
- UAH later dug into the lead in the fifth as Copeland crossed home plate for the first time on a Justin Ware at-bat, but the run was negated in the bottom half by Lee on a sacrifice fly out.
- Both sides went on to add one run in the seventh to bring the game to its 5-2 final.
- Tanner Burns recorded the lone UAH two-hit performance, going 2-for-3 in the loss.
- Gabe Gunter made the start on the mound for UAH, slipping to 0-1 on the year after allowing three runs in 1.2 innings of work.
- Jake Bracewell enjoyed a strong long-relief performance, as he worked 5.1 innings with two runs allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.

- Copeland's two runs scored were a season-high.
- Burns now has two multi-hit performances so far this season.

Game Changer
- Trey Mathis went 2-for-3 with the squad's lone RBI in the game-two loss.
 
Inside the Box Score
- The Chargers were on the scoreboard first in the second game on Saturday as Mathis registered a RBI single up the middle to plate Ben Rhodes.
- However, Lee plated a pair of runs on a wild pitch and error by UAH catcher AJ Walden to take a 2-1 lead.
- Lee later added one run in the fifth en route to the 3-1 victory.
- UAH totaled seven hits during the contest, with Rhodes, Mathis and Walden recording two base hits apiece.
- Despite being tagged with the loss to drop his season record to 0-2, left-hander Will Myers worked 6.0 innings with one earned run allowed and seven strikeouts.
 
Noteworthy
- Rhodes has recorded two hits in a game four times this season.
- Myers' seven strikeouts were a season-high.
