UAH Drops Series Opener against Delta State

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team fell in the series opener at Charger Park against Gulf South Conference opponent Delta State by a final score of 13-8 on Saturday night. UAH slips to 10-13 (6-7 GSC), while DSU improves to 16-7 (8-5 GSC).

- UAH and Delta State wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon. First pitch was originally slated for 1 p.m., but rain Friday night forced the schedule changes.
 
Game-Changer
- With the game tied 3-3 after four full, Delta State proceeded to rally for a total of nine runs in the top of the fifth as the Statesmen took the series-opening matchup 13-8 on Saturday.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Delta State started the scoring in the contest with two runs in the top of the first, which UAH was able to negate with two runs in the bottom half on RBI singles by Trey Mathis and Nolan Ramsey to tie the game at 2-2.
- After both sides went scoreless in the second and third innings, the Statesmen took a 3-2 edge with one run in the fourth which was quickly nullified to make it a 3-3 tie on a RBI triple to right by Justin Ware.
- Following Delta State's nine-run rally in the fifth to make it a 12-3 lead for the visitors, AJ Walden cut the deficit to eight with a solo home run to right.
- DSU regained a nine-run lead at 13-4 with one run in the sixth, but UAH totaled one run in the seventh and three in the ninth to make a late push before the Statesmen completed the 13-8, series-opening win.
- Jake Bracewell took the loss to drop his season record to 0-3, while totaling 3.2 innings pitched, five earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
- Ian McCoy enjoyed a strong 3.0 innings of shutout relief in the contest, allowing one hit and striking out one in the process.
- The Chargers totaled nine hits in the loss, led by Ramsey, Walden and Ware with two apiece.
- Ware had a team-high two extra-base hits with an additional double during the game.
- Ben Rhodes drew a team-best two walks.
 
Noteworthy
- Walden now has a team-high five home runs in the 2017 campaign.
- Ware's two doubles were a season-high, giving the senior a team-best eight doubles.
