DECATUR, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams closed out Gulf South Conference regular season action on Wednesday as the men's team fell 5-1 to No. 37 North Alabama while the women's team dropped a 5-0 decision to UNA. The men slip to 9-14 (2-7 GSC), while the women fall to 9-12 (5-5 GSC).
Â
In the men's contest against the nationally-ranked Lions, UNA gained a 2-1 lead out of doubles with UAH's point coming from
Harrison Stone and
Timo Christen at the third where the pairing won 8-3, while the top pairing of
Elliot Hopson and
Sebastian Rohrbach put up a strong fight in falling 9-7.
Â
In singles play,
Chris Miller at the top spot forced his match to go three sets after bouncing back from a 6-4 loss in the opener with a 6-2 win in the middle frame before ultimately falling 6-0 in the third, and though both of their spots would be left unfinished with the match sealed for UNA, both Hopson and
Guilherme Coleta extended their contests into a third set, also.
Â
In the abbreviated women's contest, UNA swept the points in doubles action with UAH's top effort coming from
Monika Polakovic and
Marta Briega who battled to an 8-5 loss.
Â
The Lions then captured the points at the Nos. 4 and 5 to secure the victory.
Â
The men will have one last regular season contest when they face The Citadel on Saturday in Birmingham before turning their focus to the GSC tournament where they will serve as the No. 8 seed and face West Florida.
Â
The women's squad will be back in action when they open the GSC tournament as the sixth seed against third-seeded West Alabama.
