REGULAR SEASON FINALE: The 18th-ranked UAH softball team will close out the regular season this weekend, traveling to West Alabama for a three-game series that starts with a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday and concludes with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. The Chargers visiting Livingston with a 36-14 (21-9 Gulf South Conference) record.
Â
BIG IMPLICATIONS: UAH'S postseason fate rests in its own hands as the team can clinch the top seed and hosting rights for the 2017 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships with a sweep of the Tigers this weekend.
Â
AROUND THE GSC: The conference standings remain tight as the Chargers sit in first at a half-game ahead of West Florida who is 20-9 with a contest that was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up. In third is North Alabama at 20-10, while Lee and Mississippi College are tied for fourth at 19-10. Valdosta State is in sixth at 18-12, while West Georgia is seventh at 15-15. Shorter and Delta State are battling for postseason positions at 14-15 and 14-16, respectively.
Â
RANKINGS UPDATE: The Chargers technically dropped a spot in this week's national poll, falling from a tie for 17th to holding 18th on its own. West Florida moved up to No. 12 as the only other GSC school in the poll.
Â
NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Kaitlyn Bannister has moved to the list of 25 finalists for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player of the Year for the second straight year after previously landing on the watch list at the beginning of the season. Bannister is currently third in the country in home runs with 16, and she is the fifth toughest player to strikeout in Division II on the season.
Â
NOTHING FREE: Tyler Harrison's strikeout total has been impressive throughout the season, but her ability to limit the amount of walks she has issued has been terrific as well as she ranks 30th in the nation in walks allowed per seven innings at just 0.95. The senior has allowed just 20 free passes on the year, and she has not issued one in 21 of her 30 appearances.
Â
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA: The Tigers head into the season's last weekend at 21-28 (11-19 GSC), but the team is 13-8 in Livingston. Audrey Diekmann leads the team offensively with a .399 average and 35 RBI, while Andrea Edmunds is 16-23 on the season in the circle with a 4.33 ERA while totaling 156 strikeouts.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers are 66-9 all-time against UWA after sweeping the three-game set in Huntsville last year. In 2015 in Livingston, UAH won two of three after splitting the doubleheader and winning the rubber contest.
