MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team will continue play at the 2018 Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer Championships on Friday in the semifinals, as the third-seeded Chargers will take on the No. 2 seed West Florida at 5 p.m. at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.
UAH advanced in the tournament after beating West Alabama 1-0 in the quarterfinals at home at Charger Park on Tuesday, and this will be the fifth appearance in the semifinals for the Chargers in the past six seasons.
In the game against West Alabama, UAH's leading goal scorer sophomore
Rafa Moreno tallied his 14th of the season which was also his fifth game-winner of the year, moving him into a tie for first in the GSC in game-winning scores.
The Chargers also received a strong performance in goal from senior
Myles Fullen who stopped six shots en route to his sixth shutout of the season – a mark that is tied for tops in the league. Additionally, Fullen increased his save percentage to .753 which is the second-best mark in the conference.
West Florida earned a bye into the semifinals after finishing second in the GSC by going 11-3-2 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play.
The Argos are led by GSC Player of the Year Sean Hoffstatter who scored 17 times and assisted on six other goals during the regular season to total 40 points.
When the two teams met in the regular season in Pensacola, UWF was a 4-1 winner over the Chargers, but the contest was a one-goal game until the Argos scored twice in the final two minutes of the game to create the lopsided score line.
The match was in fact much closer than the final score, with UWF only outshooting the Chargers by one at 15-14, and corners were even in the game with both team's earning three.
The two teams have a lengthy postseason history as West Florida is the team that the Chargers have faced the most in the postseason, and the Argos hold a 6-1-1 advantage all-time against UAH in the GSC tournament.
UAH's victory in the postseason series came in 1996 when the Chargers won 4-0 over UWF in the semifinals on the team's way to the program's first-ever GSC tournament title.
Friday's winner will play the team that advances from the other semifinal contest that pits the No. 1 seed Spring Hill and fifth-seeded Lee.
The championship game is slated for 3 p.m. on Sunday.
