UAH Charges Back for Come-From-Behind Victory at Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team battled back from what was once an 18-point deficit to knock off host Kentucky State 59-58 on Monday night. The Chargers improve to 1-1 on the season, while KSU slips to 3-1.

Turning Point
-Holly Harris made her first bucket of the game count in a major way as her 3-pointer with just over two minutes left in the game tied the contest at 57-57, and the true freshman would steal the ball away on the ensuing possession.
-The Franklin, Tennessee, native was subsequently fouled, and Harris stepped up to the line and buried both to put the Chargers ahead for the first time of the night.

Inside the Box Score
-Aryn Sanders was once again strong for the Chargers, scoring 20 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Katie Speegle notched a double-double with 13 points and an impressive 15 rebounds.
-Emiline Payne rounded out UAH's double-figure scoring contingent by tallying 10 on the evening.
-For the game, the Chargers shot 35.7 percent compared to a 33.9 percent mark for the hosts, and UAH held Kentucky State to a 3-point performance of 12.5 percent.
-Kentucky State held a slim edge on the glass, outrebounding the Chargers by a 45-43 clip.

Inside the Flow
-The hosts jumped out of the gates quickly, establishing a 14-4 lead by the 5:46 mark of the opening quarter, and Kentucky State would lead 19-11 going into the second.
-It was in the second stanza that the advantage would grow to as many as 18 for KSU, but the Chargers would close the period on an 11-4 run over the final 3:44 to make the gap a more manageable 37-26 at the halftime break.
-The Chargers then scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to only five after a bucket by Payne at the 7:10 mark made it a 37-32 contest, and though Kentucky State would answer and push the lead back into double-digits, the guests once again had a strong finish to the quarter to make it 50-44 going into the final frame.
-The home team held a 54-47 lead with 6:48 left in the game, but UAH then ripped off a 12-3 run punctuated by the Harris theatrics that put the Chargers ahead 59-57 with just 1:28 remaining.
-Kentucky State then could only muster one more free throw in the game's final moments as UAH held on for the road win.

Noteworthy
-Sanders has reached 20 points in both of UAH's games on the young season.
-Speegle records her second career double-double, and the 15 rebounds are a new career high for the junior whose previous best was 11 which she did twice last season.
-The 15 rebounds represent the best showing on the glass by a Chargers since Feb. 27, 2014, when Juanice Newton collected 18 boards against Union.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will be off until Friday when the team travels to Florida to take on Barry on the campus of Nova Southeastern at 11 a.m. CST.
