Second-Half Push Lifts Barry Past UAH on Friday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell on Friday to Barry, dropping an 86-75 decision in a neutral site contest played at Nova Southeastern. The Chargers slip to 1-2 on the season, while Barry improves to 2-2.
 
Turning Point
-A key 7-1 run for the Bucs helped Barry turn a five-point advantage into its largest lead of the game at 81-69 with just 3:44 left in the contest, and that deficit would prove too much to overcome for the Chargers.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Katie Speegle had another strong day for the Chargers as she knocked down eight shots on her way to scoring a team-best 19 points, and the junior was also a strong distributor of the ball as she handed out five assists while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
-The rebounding performance by Speegle was matched by Aryn Sanders who also scored in double figures with 14, and UAH's group of top scorers was rounded out by Emiline Payne who had 10 in the first half on her way to finishing the game with 13 to go along with four assists.
-For the game, UAH shot 44.1 percent from the floor with Barry connecting on 48.3 percent of its attempted shots.
-The Bucs also won the battle on the glass, grabbing 41 rebounds to UAH's 28.
 
Inside the Flow
-The first quarter of the game was one of momentum swings with the first belonging to UAH who jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the 5:23 mark before Barry responded with its own strong spurt to go ahead 20-15 with 2:21 left in the period.
-UAH would then hold the Bucs scoreless the rest of the quarter, and a Morgan Tipton shot near the buzzer allowed the Chargers to go into the second frame holding a 22-20 lead.
-A terrific start to the second allowed UAH to push its advantage out to its biggest of the afternoon when a Sanders triple made it 33-22 with 6:21 remaining in the half, but Barry would narrow the gap to just three by the break at 41-38.
-The lead would exchange hands five times in the third quarter, with Barry taking a 64-59 lead into the fourth.
-The Chargers scored the first four points of the finale stanza to pull within one at 64-63 with 9:22 remaining, but the Bucs scored 22 of the final 34 points of the game to secure the victory.
 
Noteworthy
-The Chargers took care of the basketball on Saturday, turning it over a season-low 13 times while also handing out a season-high 14 assists.
-Sanders – who entered the game as the Gulf South Conference's leading scorer – now has reached double figures in three straight games to open the season.
-The five assists for Speegle match a career-best for her, equaling the five she recorded against Christian Brothers on Jan. 6 of last season.

-UAH will look to bounce back on Saturday when it plays Nova Southeastern. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
