UAH Upsets Lee to Advance to GSC Tournament Semifinals Saturday

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville sixth-seeded volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 upset win (25-20, 25-22, 25-16) over third-seeded Lee on Friday night at the UWF Field House on the opening day of the 2018 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championships. UAH improves to 23-10 on the season, while LU closes its season with an 18-14 overall record.

- UAH returns to action in the GSC tournament on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. matchup against No. 2 seed West Alabama.
 
Turning Point
- The Chargers opened the first set with a 25-20 victory and would not look back as UAH turned in consecutive wins of 25-22 and 25-16 in the second and third sets, respectively, to earn the upset victory.
 
Inside the Action
- After Lee slimmed the UAH lead in the first set to 16-15, the Chargers closed out the frame on a 9-5 run to own an early 1-0 match lead with the 25-20 win in the stanza.
- The second set was tightly contested throughout the majority of the frame until UAH turned in a 7-4 rally to finish out the 25-22 win in the set.
- UAH controlled the majority of the third and final frame of the night and finished off the three-set victory with a 5-0 run for the 25-16 match-sealing win.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman Kendall Scharbert paced the UAH offense with a team-high nine kills and a .286 hitting percentage.
- Anna LeDuc finished second to Scharbert with seven successful swats.
- Sabrina Duncan posted a team-high 26 assists while also chipping in four total blocks and nine digs defensively.
- Four Chargers reached double-digit digs, headlined by Haley Hop with a match-best 25 scoops.
- Joining Hop in double-digit digs included Abby Brooks (14), LeDuc (13) and Lorah Yonce (10).
- Caroline Sanford dominated at the net with a team-high eight total blocks, adding six kills on offense as well.
 
Noteworthy
- This is the UAH volleyball program's first GSC tournament win since the 2012 campaign.
- The Chargers have reached the GSC semifinals 14 times in program history.
